The Bethany Center Offers Its Annual Camp Brave Heart
April 8 – 10, 2022
All children need to be surrounded by love, especially those who have recently experienced the death of a loved one. Good Shepherd Hospice recognizes the special needs of these children and has created Camp Brave Heart. This weekend camp for children, ages 6 to 16, helps those who have recently lost a loved one share their feelings of loss with others. The experience combines healing with fun, letting children know that life still has a lot to offer.
Schedule and Location
Camp will be held Friday, April 8 through Sunday, April 10 at the Circle F. Dude Ranch in Lake Wales. Round-trip transportation is provided for all campers from Auburndale and Sebring to the campsite via chartered bus. Camp is situated in a rustic, wooded setting with secure, comfortable cabins. Well-prepared meals will be provided and served daily.
Camp staff members include a full-time registered nurse, Good Shepherd Hospice employees and other dedicated volunteers. Each cabin is assigned a professionally trained cabin leader who assists with group discussions and provides support, as needed. All camp staff members undergo police background checks and receive comprehensive training.
The camp environment combines exciting outdoor activities with opportunities for brief group discussions led by professionally trained cabin leaders. One of the most poignant activities is a memorial service designed to provide healing and closure opportunities for the child. Supervised camp activities include arts and crafts, canoeing, swimming and horseback riding.
Good Shepherd Hospice is seeking sponsors to underwrite Camp Brave Heart. If you are interested in making monetary or in-kind donations, please contact Michelle Gomez in the Foundation at 863-583-3129.
How to Register
Registration includes participating in an interview with a Good Shepherd Hospice counselor, at which time an application and all necessary releases will be completed. A $10 fee per child is collected at that time; however, no one will be denied because of inability to pay. Registration is required for attendance. Children are accepted to participate in camp based on appropriateness and space availability.
